You really make me wanna watch The Good Wife.
YOU SHOULD WATCH THE GOOD WIFE.
no but in all seriousness— it is one of the best shows on television right now, it is one of the best shows on television in the history of television, and it is the most mature show i’ve ever seen on tv— everything about it is deeply adult, from the way the characters interact with each other romantically and sexually to the way the show constructs the world around them (the law is occasionally bullshit, it is occasionally miraculous, it is occasionally both), to the way the characters exist within their own moral compasses (alicia’s growth arc is unparalleled— she grows by wanting, by accepting, by conceding, but never by changing. alicia’s always been alica, but what alica encompasses grows in scope.) it has the best guest stars on tv (every working new york actor you can think of has been a judge or an opposition lawyer on ths show) and though it operates within the construction of a procedural (a new case each episode) the cases are very much built around the overall serial arcs rather than the other way around. it challenges what can be done with television (it gets away with more sexually than any other show on tv) and pushes the boundaries of what stories you can tell in a televisual medium, it grows and evolves more naturally than any other show, and it will make you so invested that you will scream and throw things and shove giant forkfuls of cheesecake into your mouth by the millisecond (all of which i have done, particularly this season). you invest in these characters and where they’re going in a way that shows rarely ask you to invest, and they are all so deeply human that you feel like this could be going on down the street from you. and the cases are always new and fresh and interesting and so intrinsically invested in what it means to live in our time that the show is going to be an interesting time capsule in twenty years. (they’re the only show on the air that knows what the hell to do with the internet, partially because they admit that none of their adult characters really understand the internet.) and it’s the only show i’ve seen in recent times acknowledge, in-story, that it had a problem on a social justice axis (it’s never been good at race) and actively work to fix it.
you should watch the good wife.
